Most would agree that Red Devils goalkeeper David De Gea is the best at his position on the planet. While United will obviously not be in the keeper market if the Spaniard remains in Manchester through the summer, there is rampant speculation regarding a potential move to Real Madrid. If De Gea were to move back to Spain, United would obviously need to find a quality replacement.
Replacing De Gea with another keeper of the same caliber is nearly impossible, but there are plenty of other high-quality options at his position. According to the Metro, United have already put feelers out on a potential signing of Brazilian keeper Alisson Becker, who currently plies his craft in Italy for AS Roma.
Alisson, currently in the midst of his second season with Roma, has emerged as one of Europe’s best keepers this term. The Brazilian has also reportedly been a target of Liverpool, but Jurgen Klopp’s side may stand pat at the position with the recent emergence of Loris Karius in net. A reputable betting site would tell you that Alisson’s chances of leaving for Liverpool this summer are rather slim.
Most estimates say that it would cost a potential buyer around £70 million to pry Alisson from Italy.
Madrid have been keen on landing De Gea for years. The Spanish giants were reportedly on the verge of landing De Gea back in the summer of 2015, but they failed to get the proper paperwork through in time before the transfer window closed. Most expected Los Blancos to come back for De Gea in the following window, but the Spaniard has enjoyed a stellar stint with United instead.
With current No. 1 KeylorNavas having seen his form slip in his age-31 season, Madrid are expected to seek an upgrade at the position when the window opens again in the summer. The club’s interest in De Gea has reportedly cooled a bit, but manager Zinedine Zidane is reportedly still an admirer.
Of course, it remains to be seen whether Zidane will be retained in his position as manager once this season ends. He may not have a say one way or the other in the end.
Alisson was asked earlier this month about Liverpool’s reported interest. The 25-year-old found Klopp’s interest “flattering” but added that he remains focused on finishing the season with his current club. Becker and Roma were ousted by an aggregate score of 7-6 by Liverpool in the semi-finals of Champions League.
He added, “I don’t know what will happen in the summer. Obviously, the interest makes me happy. But I don’t think it’s a question of needing to move. I know what I’m worth, not money wise, but as a player.”
It’s also worth noting that United manager Jose Mourinho has gone on public record saying there is “no chance” De Gea will be sold in the summer. Of course, that remains to be seen. Becker joined Roma in the summer of 2016 after starting his professional career with International of the Brazilian league.
